RIDERS ON THE STORM

By Joob
Surfing has become Phuket's hottest activity and latest tourist attraction

Strong winds and waves during the monsoon season in Phuket may turn away many visitors hoping to have a sunny, breezy holiday. It is worse for local business owners, as stormy June is the so-called low season.

HANG 10: Preecha Trirat, winner in the longboard division, in action.

But for Chanin Aiyarak, it is the happiest time of the year. And this year, he said, has been the best ever.

Last month, as the rain began to fall in Phuket, the inaugural Quiksilver Thailand Surf Series became the country's first international surfing championship.

Standing with a big smile in his surfer outfit was Mr Chanin, president of Phuket Boardriders Club, welcoming guests as well as the local and international media that attended this promising new event.

A small price to pay

By Moggs
Well we went, we saw and we surfed...well Annissa did...but only just!

First flight on the way to Bali saw us board a Air Asia flight to Kuala Lumpur which arrived safely, we got off the aircraft and looked for the transit lounge for the connecting flight to Denpasar. No such luck, no transit lounge at KL...you first have to enter Malaysia first. So we fill out all the immigration forms and wait to be possessed with all the other people actually entering Malaysia. First whiff of trouble.. the immigration officer disappears with all out passports, he comes back and takes beckons us to a private room.....Annissas passport only has 6 weeks left on it and you cannot continue on to Indonesia.  I said whats it got to do with you...we're just here on a transfer flight!...why are we trying to get into Malaysia anyway?...No Go.. Even though we all have return tickets, and only traveling to Bali for 3 days they have trouble with it. So we beg them to let us in and take our chances at the Indonesian end....eventually after an hour they let us through immigration....we get to the left baggage area in a panic, as you have to get your bags after immigration, and there are our bags and boards on the floor by themselves, unattended!

Queen of the Groms

By Joob
THE next women’s world champion surfer may very well be living on Phuket.

Annissa Tita Flynn is already turning heads, as well as good waves, as she impresses everyone with her surfing ability. And all at just eleven years of age.

Annissa, a pupil at Phuket Thai Hua School, is a quiet girl who loves the water. At the weekend she spends every available minute practising her moves on the waves and will often persuade her father, Michael, to take her to the beach, during the week, if she finishes her homework early. It’s this dedication to the sport that has brought her success.

Grom’s Tear It Up on Day 2 of Quiksilver King of the Groms at Kuta Beach

By Joob
10 July 2009, Kuta-Bali:  The level of surfing measurably increased on Day 2 at the Quiksilver King of the Groms today at Kuta Beach during Rounds 1 and 2, due to the presence of seeded groms now competing as well as the slight drop in wave size that created much cleaner conditions for the day’s surfing.

The 2-3 foot waves were lined up much better, so the more proficient groms were finding longer and steeper walls to race down before taking deep bottom turns and lining up to blast a big hack or try to punt an air.  There were still some 4-foot closeouts to dodge, but overall the conditions were very close to perfect for the 16 and under grommets.
