flocked to the beach to attend the opening ceremony and then get a
glimpse of Indonesia’s top surfers such as Dede Suryana, Lee
Wilson, Marlon Gerber, Betet Merta, and Garut Widiarta take on the
firing reefbreak of Bo’a. In this first day of competition, Rounds 1 and 2 were completed as well as the first two heat of Round 3. Rip Curl Cup on high alert; contest could run this weekend
By JoobPadang Padang, Bali –– The waves remained small in Bali Tuesday, but all that should chage dramatically by week's end. Contest directors for the 2009 Rip Curl Cup Invitational at Padang Padang have switched the official event status from red to yellow, or “high alert." Currently there is a nice low pressure system forming in the southernmost regions of the Indian Ocean. So far it's been tracking on an ideal northerly course to potentially send massive amounts of southwest swell towards the Indonesian Archipelago. Right now the estimated time of arrival is looking like Friday, August 14, with the peak hitting over the weekend. Tides for Padang are also looking ideal during this time, with medium tides all day. Contest directors are eyeing this storm closely and the 32 contestants for this year's Rip Curl Cup have all been put on notice for a possible Friday morning start. Many of the 16 international invitees are already in Bali or are preparing to book flights. For now, it's on when it's on...
Tsunami watch cancelled
By JoobThe earthquake was centred about 262 kilometres north of India's Andaman Islands and took place at 1956 GMT, the US Geological Survey (USGS) in Denver, Colorado, reported. It struck in the early Tuesday morning hours local time and was 30 kilometres below the earth's surface.
The Pacific tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii issued a tsunami watch for Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Myanmar and Thailand, saying the earthquake was strong enough to produce a tsunami along coastlines within 1,000 kilometres of its epicentre.
However, it cancelled the warning a few hours later "as sea levels indicated that a significant tsunami was not generated."//DPA
